Inspired by Japanese mountain culture and traditions such as Fujizuka and Suiseki (see Yama to Ana), Dunhill and O’Brien sadly didn’t have enough time, or the stamina, of the great explorer Alexander von Humboldt to visit all of the mountain sites in Japan during their 2 month residency at Youkobo Art Space in the hot summer of 2007.
Instead most of their time was spent devising and testing prototype tools and accessories to be used in producing a ‘Japanese Sculpture’ that would employ as many as possible of the mountains of Japan to actually form the work. .
Each tool (such as: working overalls: hats: gloves: beaters: modelling tools and saws etc) would incorporate the profiles and modelled forms of a Japanese Mountain or range based on geological maps, visits to mountains and descriptions gathered from local people.
This project is ongoing if you can offer any advice or insight in to Japanese Mountains, Fujizuka, Suiseki or useful tools for Sculpture please email the artists under ‘contacts’. Many thanks.
